What is AAC?

AAC* refers to various communication methods that people use alongside or instead of speech

* Augmentative and Alternative Communication

People may use AAC if they have difficulty with speech. This can include anything from body language and simple signs or gestures to symbol boards and electronic communication devices

Practically everyone uses some form of AAC in addition to speech, such as facial expressions or gestures, to complement what they are saying

AAC stands for "Augmentative and Alternative Communication"

"Augmentative" means "adding to," referring to anything used to supplement a person's speech. For example, someone might use AAC if their speech is unclear, if they are talking to people who are less familiar to them, or if they are in a noisy or stressful environment.

"Alternative" means "instead of," referring to anything used in place of speech. Alternative communication may be needed for a person who cannot speak or has language difficulties that affect their ability to communicate. This could be someone who has never spoken or someone who has lost their speech.

How can AAC help?

There are numerous benefits to using AAC that go beyond simply requesting what one wants or needs. When AAC is implemented successfully, a person can express their thoughts and opinions, share stories and jokes, request information, and let others know when something is wrong

Using AAC can help people build relationships within their community. It can enable someone to participate in social groups and situations that may have previously been inaccessible
